Objective

Identifying barriers faced by persons with disabilities and older persons in accessing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), especially in the context of humanitarian response.
Examining challenges and opportunities faced by WASH actors in providing inclusive WASH services.
Empowering persons with disabilities and older persons to promote inclusive WASH services.

Result / Programme Outcome

Research design and instruments which are participatory, accessible and relevant for WASH sector.
Capacitated project team and local partner organisations with sufficient knowledge and skills related to the research topic, approaches and ethics.
Project technical reports with relevant recommendations for policy makers and practitioners at all levels.
Practical tool/brief on inclusive WASH focused on gaps identification in different contexts.
Broader local and national practices-informed advocacy on inclusive WASH with the meaningful involvement of persons with disabilities and older persons.
Validated and peer reviewed documentation of key findings, disseminated at regional and global Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) or humanitarian response related conferences and consultation forums.
Persons with disabilities and older persons capacitated to be advocates at promoting and influencing inclusion in WASH sector.

Key Activities

Developing participatory and accessible research design and instruments together with partner organisations.
Training and workshop on research protocols and ethics, as well as disability etiquette.
Developing feedback and complaint mechanisms.
Building the capacities of OPDs and Older People's Associations (OPAs) in identifying the barriers and promoting the opportunities of inclusive WASH.
Engaging with local communities to ensure the fulfillment of research ethics.
Peer research: collecting data at local and national levels with persons with disabilities and older persons.
Disseminating research findings.
