TAGANA (Social Authority Disaster Preparedness Youth Corps) of Sleman District in collaboration with ASB conducted simulation drill for whirlwind, earthquake and volcano on March 17, 2013 at Mlati Sub-district, Sleman, Yogyakarta.
This was the first inclusive simulation drill conducted by TAGANA with the participation of people with disabilities. Disabled People Organisations (DPOs) and village cadres trained under DIPECHO funded project entitled “Building resilience for children with disabilities: strethening DRR Information delivery” actively participated in the planning and simulation. Community members with disabilities, including children with disabilities at schools and outside of schools, together with their carers also conducted evacuation drill for whirlwind, earthquake and volcano.
“I am grateful that people with disabilities were involved to participate in this simulation drill. This is the first simulation drill conducted by TAGANA with the participation of people with disabilities. This inclusive simulation can better prepare us in the event of disaster. Also, it can raise disability awareness for wider community members. I hope that all future simulation drill will be inclusive. Only by then, priority for people with disabilities as the most at risk in the event of a disaster is not only on paper statement,” said Mrs. Ratna Dewi Setianingsih, a member of Organisasi Disabilitas Mlati (a DPO of Mlati Sub-district).
TAGANA will continue this collaboration to make all simulation drills inclusive. The next simulation is to be conducted in Depok Sub-district, Sleman, Yogyakarta.
