Inclusion has been underrated in most instances of humanitarian response around the world. By the same token, in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector, accessibility of the services is often overlooking the barriers faced by the most at-risk groups. Despite numerous regulations and guidelines stressing the urgency of inclusion, there are noticeable gaps in defining awareness and commitment into real actions. Responding to this situation, ASB initiated a research project which aims to explore the underlying factors that hinders inclusion to be a key principle in humanitarian activities, particularly in the provision of WASH services.
The “Investing in inclusive WASH: Identifying barriers and values” project is a collaborative study involving academia as well as organisations of persons with disabilities. Partnered with Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and the Working Group of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in Palu, Sigi, and Donggala (Pokja OPDis Pasigala), the research will cover 20 villages in two districts of Central Sulawesi Province. This project is funded by the Elrha’s Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF) and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), and supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri).
