The United Nations has published Best Practices for including Persons with Disabilities in all Aspects of Development Efforts including an ASB Indonesia project targeting children with disabilities outside of school.
The project provided practical disaster risk reduction (DRR) information and procedures to children with disability excluded from school in 230 villages. The project was supported by the European Commission Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (DIPECHO).
The publication supports the implementation of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and was prepared for a Conference of State Parties in New York. Indonesia ratified the CRPD in October 2011.
Dr Alex Robinson, ASB Indonesia’s Country Director, says:
‘People with disability are all too often excluded from development programming. Considering the increased risk of death and injury that people with disability face in times of disasters, it is essential that there are more efforts to include people with disability within DRR. This is all the more the case for those children with disability who are excluded from school and have severely limited access to potentially life-saving information and procedures.
We are delighted that this project was selected as an example of international best practice. It is a highly significant project as it demonstrates that practical DRR information and procedures can be effectively delivered to people with disability in rural communities at scale.’
